Engine Installation Helps and Hints From Owners (427)

ERA 742

While the ERA manual recommends installing the engine and transmission separately, I found dropping the 428 CJ and the toploader as a unit much easier since it was going to be a one man operation and it was easier to mate the transmission and engine while they were on the bench rather than me working under the car trying to jocky in the transmission  My engine hoist was a bit too short to go in though the nose but installation from the side was relatively easy.

An engine leveler was a must and the tranny tunnel sheet metal directly under the dash was removed to provide clearance. Make certain the engine sits level prior to final tightening of the  engine mount bolts.  My installation was off by just a bit which necessitated loosing the engine and transmission mounts later to adjust the engine when it came time to install the side pipes.  All in all, though, a one man job and the engine and transmission slipped in easily and within about an hour.  Holes for the engine and transmission mounts lined up perfectly.
